Bath Spa Wellbeing Group with Bath Mind: Ross’ Story
I wanted to try and normalise young men talking about mental health and raise awareness for those struggling, with university work, or wider personal troubles whatever they may be.
I originally got involved with Bath Mind at the beginning of second year, suffering with depression I was incredibly surprised and worried with the lack of student support available at University. Especially being a young man, there’s still an awful lot of stigma attached to mental well-being and seeking support, so when I did reach out and ask for this support and it wasn’t there, it was an incredible eye opener for me – how many other students, particularly young men, had been in that position over the years and either left University, or given up on life completely.
I wanted to try and normalise young men talking about mental health and raise awareness for those struggling, with university work, or wider personal troubles whatever they may be.
So, in the midst of setting up this support group I stumbled across Max Webster who was aiming to begin a biweekly Bath Mind support group. The group quickly evolved into a lovely diverse blend of all students and alumni, of all genders and ages. Demand was so high that we in-fact immediately began running the sessions every Thursday.
The group just started to gain momentum when COVID-19 hit, however during lockdown it has been incredibly helpful to continue growing the community, keeping in touch via weekly Zoom meetings. It may seem small but when you’re in a dark place this meeting can be the highlight of your week, having others to talk to about your struggles with no judgement and helpful advice, the attendees quickly become some of your closest friends.
Now in my final year of university, a year on from being in my dark place, I feel it is only right to continue supporting the group and the charity.
I am therefore organising a fundraiser for Bath Mind to raise money and give back to Max, and the charity, for all they have done for not only me but all of the other attendees.
The virtual event is running on December 8th 6-8pm. Buy your tickets here!
Thank you Ross, for your honest and insightful words.
