Finding Strength in Giving Back – Meryl’s Story
After facing major life changes due to her mental health, Meryl found purpose through volunteering, creative expression, and the encouragement of those around her — especially through the support of Bath Mind. In the following blog, Meryl shares her reflections, challenges, and how the right support made all the difference.

The peer support I received over the years, as well as help from Bath Mind, has made a huge difference to a very challenging life.
I was working in a really good job but had to resign then totally rethink my whole existence. I found that volunteering was very rewarding, then I was inspired by a colleague who used the expression “put something back”.
I was also inspired by a friend from the general public who gave guidance on presenting my poetry, first in a folder, then at a live event. I’ve raised some funds for Bath Mind and received lots of support as the general manager of the time attended and spoke to others in the audience. It was really empowering, especially for my accompanist, another survivor.
About ten years ago, the support staff used the expression “meaningful daytime activity”. I like that because it gives you the dignity and self belief to know that while a 9 to 5 may prove hard, you can still achieve your potential.
Bath Mind and adult learning with B&NES provided courses on creative writing, photography and art which have really helped with my recovery journey. I still use these skills today.
Sometimes the stigma can feel worse, but I discovered that the more honest I was about my disability then people would understand better and judge less.
If I was going to give advice to a younger me it would be to say, “keep fighting and don’t give up hope”.
The tips and advice on the NHS Better Health website are something I still find useful. I have drawn a worry tree and written my coping strategies which were surprisingly numerous.
It’s been tough, but the support is still at the end of the phone.
