Open Opportunities is a community support group offering people with ongoing mental health issues the opportunity to engage in social activities linked to the five ways to wellbeing (connect, be active, take notice, learn and give). The aim is to improve members’ physical and mental health, supporting people to self-care and to reduce social isolation.
Members are encouraged to get involved in all aspects of running the group and hold monthly meetings to discuss the direction of the group and plan what activities they would like to explore.
Members try a wide range of activities that help improve their wellbeing, including acting, yoga, art therapy, mindfulness, bread making, music therapy and reflexology. The group have also enjoyed days out to Wells, Bristol Zoo and Weston Super Mare.
Open Opportunities COVID Risk Assessment – Open Opportunities COVID 19 Risk Assessment
Before attending Open Opportunities I was a recluse and I found mingling in public spaces difficult. Our group coordinator and fellow group members are supportive, which has contributed to my increased confidence in public spaces. Meeting new people is easier and more comfortable, trying unfamiliar activities, such as art class and going forward I will continue seeking new experiences and relationships.

Apart from the fun of it the team work and socializing was very good for making people get ‘into the zone’ and feel better about themselves. Cooking is very creative. It’s still hard work however, but this was part of the satisfaction, especially with being able to eat it afterwards. So thank you Judith for making it so creative and fun.
