Bath Mind are here to support you in getting active this month with Movement May.

The power of sport and physical activity can be a powerful tool for all aspects of mental health. It can be used to raise awareness, tackle stigma around mental health, and support those of us with mental health problems to become more active and manage symptoms.

Getting active can:

  • Reduce anxiety and stress
  • Combat low mood and increase self-esteem
  • Help you feel good on the inside and out

We know that it can be challenging to get moving and keep active whilst under COVID-19 outbreak measures, regardless of whether you consider yourself an ‘active’ person or not.

Bath Mind are here to support you in getting active this May with our new fundraising campaign Movement May. Through our COVID-19 appeal, we asked the community of B&NES to support us in continuing to deliver our vital and life-changing services within the local community. This month, we’re aiming to encourage supporters to keep active and create fun and enjoyable ways to move, all the while supporting better mental health for their local community.

Taking part can be as simple as taking our tips and advice on getting started, to joining in with one of our Movement May challenges. 


Is Movement May for me?

We know that having a mental health problem can be physically draining, but physical activity, however big or small, can often help to improve your mood. To take part in Movement May, you don’t have to consider yourself a ‘sporty person’ or a professional athlete, we’re encouraging everyone and anyone who wants to get moving to get involved!


How can I get involved?

You can start your fundraising journey by heading to our COVID-19 Appeal Justgiving page, and click ‘start fundraising’! You can then set up your Movement Challenge page, and invite family and friends to sponsor you throughout your challenge.


Movement May Challenges with Bath Mind

What challenges can you take part in?

The Bath Mind 7 Day Challenge

Our 7-day activity challenge will introduce you each day to an activity taster session that can help you stay both mentally and physically fit at home. 

The challenge: take part in all the activities for 7 consecutive days, raising awareness for mental health and invite friends and family to sponsor you. 

What you’ll need: A pair of trainers

This challenge is beginner friendly and welcome to all. 

The challenge will begin on Monday 18th May, and finish on Sunday 24h May. 

Day One – Walk/Powerwalk 

Day Two – Tai Chi

Day Three – Run/Jog

  • Heard about the Couch 2 5km, but not sure where to start? Get your programme started with this guide and app. 

Day Four – Meditation with The Soul Spa – book here.

  • You can attend a free virtual meditation session from one of five classes from The Soul Spa on Thurs 21st May.
  • 20 minute sessions: 12pm iRest for families, 12.30 iRest, 5pm Yoga Nidra and 5.30om Unwind, Relax and Reset
  • 40 minute sessions: 1pm iRest for chronic pain 

Day Five – Hight Intensity Session

  • Get your heart rate up with a simple yet effective high intensity session. Beginner 10-minute workouts can be found here, and a beginner 45 minute workout here.
  • For a more advanced series of workouts, check out the NHS fitness studio

Day Six – Yoga

  • Yoga can be great for both our mind and our bodies. We love free online sessions from Yoga with Adriene, and the NHS guide to yoga
  • Looking for a session you can do from your wheelchair? Yoga with Adriene has a free session here

Day Seven – Zumba

The 7 Day Turbo Cycling Challenge

From 18-24th May, Mental Health Awareness Week, this cycling at home challenge is for you either as a solo rider or make a team with your family and friends.

For this challenge you’ll need:

  • Indoor bike/turbo trainer

Turbo Trainer Challenges:

Challenge 1. ALL THE 7s (for example, a challenge of 7Km, 77Km, 777Km)

Challenge 2. THE ULTIMO TURBO – Climb the 7 Hills of Bath (Bathwick, Widcombe, Wellsway, Bannerdown, Lansdown, Ralph Allen, North Road)

Challenge 3. CONQUER 7 HILLS OF THE GIRO D’ITALIA (Finestre, Agnello, Blockhaus, Imperatore, Gavia, Motirolo)
