About BME Services
Bath Mind, through its BME service, aims to
challenge discrimination and social exclusion in
accordance with Race and Disability
Discrimination Acts and to promote the rights of
the individual.
The Black and Minority Ethnic Groups Advocate
provides advocacy, information and support to
adults from BME communities who are detained, or
threatened with detention under the Mental
Health Act at Hillview Lodge Psychiatric
in-patient unit at the Royal United Hospital,
Bath and in the community.
A weekly advocacy drop-in service is held at
Hillview along with a monthly drop-in at the
MOSAIC Black and Mixed Parentage Family Group.
People can self-refer to a BME Advocate or the
advocate will accept referrals from ward staff,
consultants and social care staff.
The work of the BME Advocate includes:
- Attending ward rounds, meetings and
mental health tribunals to advocate on
behalf of and support clients as necessary
- Providing information, support and
representation in preparation of clients
attending ICPA's.
- De-briefing clients following meetings
and tribunals
- Researching issues and provide
information in response to individual client
work
- Creating effective support networks for
individual clients
- Liaising with other voluntary
organizations, private and statutory bodies
to work in partnership to promote positive
awareness of issues confronting BME
communities
